Week 1

    My first week here at Lake West Dental has been hectic but exciting. I have had a great time working with each person and each one of my mentors. When I first came in everyone was so nice and excited to have me here. after meeting everybody, I was introduced to a lot of the technology and everything that goes on here. I learned about everything from the new device that creates a 3D image of teeth, to the software called Open Dental that is used to organize and schedule. I met with one of my mentors, Louise Dagg. Her official job title is the office manager. Without her management, I don't think the business would still be here today. One of the purposes of my project is to decide on what I want to major in within business. When I think about Mrs. Dagg, business administration is what her job represents. From my mentorship, I will see if that is something that interests me.

    Mrs. Dagg quickly put me to work. I started my Wednesday off by coordinating with Key Bank. My task was to figure out how to log in to the website and make sure certain loans and deposits were correct. It was a long but simple task I had to work on. After some other small tasks, I was able to sit in on a meeting with a dental insurance provider from Empower DDS. This was a perfect example of sales that I was able to see firsthand. There were many sales tactics that I heard such as a half-price "discount" die to a referral and free supplies that come with it. I was very interested in listening because she was persuasive and positive the entire time. Although my project has just begun, I have had a fun and helpful time so far.

    Very interesting, Vince! I like your initial exposure to the business being through the lens of the office manager as they rarely get the credit for what goes on. As you correctly pointed out, the whole operation would probably fall apart when the office manager is not there. Also, like the fact that you got right into some tasks, including being able to sit in on a meeting about the insurance side of the business. That is a super complicated world that not many can grasp. Do your best to find ways to familiarize yourself with that area of the business as that is a profession for which there will always be demand

Dental Hygiene

For my second week in my Hawken Project, I started working with the dental hygienists but mostly Mrs. Loveland. The entire process was something new to me and I was very eager to learn. I started my time the dental hygiene by getting my own teeth cleaned. The process was shorter and easier than I remember it being. I learned a lot about my own teeth and it was nice to learn that there was nothing seriously wrong with my teeth. Throughout the cleaning process, she was telling me what she was doing to clean them, But also what I should be doing to prevent tartar and cavities from forming. Such as flossing more and eating less sugary foods. The entire process was simple and efficient. In the end, my teeth felt clean and I wanted to know more about the process.
